What is a Saferoom?
A saferoom is a small windowless room that has been strengthened to resist the effects of wind pressures and the impact from windborne debris generated by severe weather.
A saferoom is a system composed of a foundation, anchorage to the foundation, a floor, walls, a roof, connections, a door with hinges and latching mechanism.   The system can be compared to a chain in that it is no stronger than its weakest link.   In other words the weakest component determines the overall strength and effectiveness of the saferoom. For example, a room can be constructed with indestructible walls, roof, and door but if it is not anchored properly to an adequate foundation it is not safe and it is not a saferoom.  Likewise, a room that is anchored properly to an adequate foundation and is constructed of indestructible materials but has inadequate hardware on the door is not safe and is not a saferoom.
Remember, a saferoom is a system.   And like all systems is no stronger and no more effective than its weakest component.
Why
a Saferoom?
TO PROTECT YOUR MOST PRECIOUS POSSESSIONS
THE LIVES OF YOUR LOVED ONES
ENGINEERED SHELTERS NOT ONLY PROVIDE THE BEST PROTECTION AGAINST LOSS OF LIFE FOR INDIVIDUALS SUBJECT TO A TORNADO, BUT ALSO FURNISH THE ONLY PROTECTION RELIABLY CAPABLE OF PROVIDING SURVIVABLE PLACES OF REFUGE. Fema 342 / October 1999
Most injuries and deaths from severe wind events result from flying debris (wind borne missiles).   Even a reinforced masonry wall will be penetrated unless it has been designed and constructed specifically to resist debris impact from extreme winds.
What are the requirements of a Saferoom?
Resistance
to wind forces
Resistance
to missile penetration
Adequate
anchorage
Adequate
ventilation
Accessibility
To be truly effective, a saferoom must be readily accessible from all parts of the house.   However, a saferoom with a less than optimum location is better than no saferoom at all.   Therefore, the selection of the location of the saferoom is the first step after the decision to install a saferoom in your home or business.
Why keepSafe?
Because nothing beats the combination of protection, quality, economy, versatility, and ease of installation of a keepSafe safe room
